Southampton & Surrounding Areas
The TMG Min Quan project in Southampton and surrounding area began in November 2006. This unique groundbreaking project provides specialist services for Chinese victims of race hate crime and policing problem. The most recent study found that UK Chinese people are subject to “very substantial levels of racist abuse, assault and hostility” and are let down by service agencies and the police. The research has discovered that racially-aggravated attacks are on the rise in the UK and that people of Chinese origin are disproportionately represented as crime victims, and are exposed to higher levels of racism than many other minority groups. Many Chinese distrust the police and other criminal justice agencies and have given up reporting racially-motivated crime against them because their complaints have not been taken seriously over the years.
In order to address these problems, TMG Min Quan Southampton office has built up a partnership network with the wide statutory and voluntary agencies within Southampton and surrounding area which including Chinese Association of Southampton (CAS), Southampton City Council, the Hampshire Police, CPS, and the Universities and Colleges. TMG Min Quan has been providing on-going support to the victims of hate crime, holding a series of public meetings, workshops, safety seminars with Chinese residents and students and delivering a programme of training for the volunteers.
Over the next 2 years TMG will extend its service to Southampton and Portsmouth area and cover the two major cities in Hampshire County with BME population over 27,000. Despite continually support Chinese victims of race hate crime, our service will be extended to support all the BME victims of race hate crime across the region. We will:

- Working with agencies across the region to develop a hate crime forum
- Providing hate crime casework training for the statutory and voluntary agencies in the region
- Participating and making contributes to the work of local multi-agency forums concerned with racial violence and harassment
- Developing National Helpline and train the volunteers
- Organising cultural event and promoting a wider understanding of the diversity in the region
