Doreen Lawrence joins flag bearers at Olympic opening ceremony

Danny Boyle’s Olympic opening ceremony attempted to rewrite the history of Britain to reveal a country forged in the actions of ordinary people. it also acknowledged the role the anti-racist movement has played to make modern Britain with Doreen Lawrence joining party of flag bearers including Muhammad Ali, Ban Ki-moon, the UN secretary general, Ethiopian athletics veteran Haile Gebrselassie and Shami Chakrabati, director of Liberty, and Sally Becker, known as the Angel of Mostar, Marina Silva, who has fought against the destruction of the rainforest, Nobel Peace Prize winner Leymah Gbowee, who has worked to try and end Liberia’s civil war, and musician Daniel Barenboim.
