Five Nottinghamshire police officers could face criminal charges over the death of a promising young footballer in custody, the force’s watchdog said.
Former Nottingham Forest academy player Reece Staples, 19, was arrested on suspicion of causing criminal damage.
He collapsed in his cell and was pronounced dead at hospital in June.
The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) has investigated and passed a file of evidence to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS).
An IPCC spokesman said: “Five Nottinghamshire Police officers have been interviewed by IPCC investigators under criminal caution, prior to a file of evidence being passed on to the CPS.
“It will now be for the CPS to decide whether any criminal charges against any police officers are warranted.”
Mr Staples was arrested in Basford on 7 June.
He collapsed at Oxclose Lane police station shortly after 0500 BST and was taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
