We are one of the oldest Community-Based Anti-Racist organisations in the UK.

We wish to eradicate racism and exploitation in our society.

Our lived experience shows that this can only be achieved by transforming our society where peace and justice are foundations of a permanent reality.

Challenging the injustice of undercover policing in our communities

In 2015 the then Home Secretary, Theresa May announced that there would be a judge-led inquiry into undercover policing. This Inquiry is examining the scope of undercover policing work across England and Wales from 1968 to 2007. It covers the work of two undercover policing units – the Special Demonstration Squad (SDS) and the National Public Order Intelligence Unit (NPOIU).

The Monitoring Group, along with a number of other anti-racist group, was subject to undercover police operations during this period, for reasons unknown. We are participants to this Inquiry and have started a project to work with others affected, seeking full accountability and assessing its impact on our work.

Ricky Reel Memorial Lecture 2023

This year marks 25 years since the death of RIcky, and to mark the occasion TMG and the Reel family held at the The Guildhall, Kingston Upon Thames on 23rd October 2023

Christopher Kapessa should be 16 now.

16, the start of so many milestones; a first job, college, friends, cars, the rest of his life. We cannot help but wonder how much he would have achieved had his life not been taken from him. We must demand justice for Christopher #JusticeForChristopherKapessa

We build collective knowledge and understanding of systems and structures that support and perpetuate racism

We are a grassroots organisation helping people and sharing lived experiences by :

  • Daily representation and advocacy on behalf of clients suffering race discrimination and racially motivated hate crimes

  • Research, data collection & evaluation projects

  • participating in community organising and stablishing public interest campaigns, self-organized and arts-based projects within Black, Asian and minority ethnic communities to address injustice, representation and marginalization and to empower racialised groups of our society.

  • participating in legal forums such as Public Inquiries that have examined the prevalence of racism and neglect within public bodies, including police (Stephen Lawrence Inquiry and Undercover Police Inquiry), prisons (Zahid Mubarak Inquiry), and care services (Victoria Climbie Inquiry)

Since our inception, over 40 years years the Monitoring Group has been a leading voice for family led empowerment and justice campaigns in the UK. It has helped hundreds of families, and established campaigns for many including the families of Blair Peach, Kuldip Sekhon, Stephen Lawrence, Ricky Reel, Michael Menson, Zahid Mubarak, Victoria Climbie, Mi Gao Chen and Christopher Kapessa

These Family Campaigns led to Public Judicial Inquiries and consequent changes in legislation and social practices, transforming modern Britain

Lockdown and the rise race hate crimes

As Britain went into lockdown fears about health infection rates and the catastrophic impact on the economy set in, but something else was taking hold. We've been speaking to the anti-racism charity, The Monitoring Group, and they've noticed an alarming trend: a rise in racist hate crime.

I’m not sure what I would be doing if the TMG hadn’t helped me, I was at my lowest point when I came here and would be dead by now

‘I’m still traumatised by it and can’t talk about it. When the police turned up, I thought cool but then when I saw them do nothing I just had to say, ‘why aren’t you not doing anything is it because they are white

When you get to a point like I did .. you struggle to light at the end of the tunnel … TMG helped me understand how injustice works, and how to fight my case… it was empowering’
