Man who died in Birmingham police custody was racism victim, family tells inquest

THE family of a black man who died in police custody in Birmingham six years ago told an inquest they believe he was a victim of racism by officers.

Michael Powell was 38 when he died in the cells at Thornhill Road police station, Handsworth, after he was arrested for causing a disturbance outside his home.

The jury inquest into his death began at Sutton Town Hall yesterday and is expected to last six weeks.
