A TAXI driver was assaulted and racially abused in Chesterfield.

The 27-year-old driver was parked at the rank in Church Walk at around 12.45am on Saturday, May 19 when he was approached by a couple who asked him to take them to Darley Dale.

As they drove along Whitecotes Lane, the man punched the plastic partition separating the front of the taxi from the passengers in the back, smashing it.

He then racially abused the driver.
