Stephen Lawrence Report – Ten Years On

This is the draft speech given by John Denham last week.

Thank you very much for the opportunity to address you today.

Stephen Lawrence dreamed of being an architect, changing the way that inner cities worked and the lives of the people who live there. His senseless murder, sixteen years ago, cut those dreams short.

And we all know – we are here today in part because of it – the refusal of his mother and father to let his death be in vain. To accept the total inadequacy of the police investigation that followed. Their dignity in the face of unimaginable sorrow and grief; their determination to pursue justice no matter how difficult, has changed Britain immeasurably. We all owe them a huge debt.
